Live Wedding Illustration Across Sydney, the Hunter Valley & NSW: Guest Portraits as Keepsakes

There’s a moment at weddings that I always notice.

The music softens. Guests slow down. Someone steps forward, sits, and suddenly the room feels a little quieter, more present. It’s never rushed. It’s never showy. It’s just a pause. And in that pause, something really lovely happens.

That’s the moment I begin drawing. Live wedding illustration isn’t about novelty or entertainment in the loud sense. It’s about creating space. Space to be seen. Space to feel held. Space to turn a fleeting moment into something that lasts.

I’ve illustrated weddings across Sydney, the Hunter Valley, and throughout regional NSW from Berry to the Southern Highlands to the Blue Mountains and no matter the location or scale of the celebration, the heart of the work is always the same: people, connection, and memory.

What Live Wedding Illustration Really Is

At its core, live wedding illustration is a gift. One that guests don’t expect, but deeply appreciate.

During the day, I begin with a signature couple portrait, then sketch guests live around twelve per hour, each one drawn by hand, in real time. Every portrait is slipped into a clear sleeve, ready to take home. There’s no ordering process later, no waiting, no follow up required. Guests leave with something tangible in their hands.

But what stays with them isn’t just the paper, it’s the feeling of being noticed.

So many guests tell me later that they still have their portrait framed, tucked into a book, or pinned somewhere special at home.

Why Couples Choose Live Illustration for Their Wedding

Couples often come to me saying the same thing in different ways:

“We want our guests to feel cared for.”
“We want to do something meaningful, not overdone.”
“We want our wedding to feel like us.”

Live illustration meets that intention beautifully. It doesn’t interrupt the flow of the day. It fits into it. Guests can come and go, chat, laugh and watch the sketches unfold. There’s no pressure, no performance. Just a quiet presence.

For couples, it’s a way to give back to the people who have shown up for them be it parents, grandparents, friends, chosen family. It works across generations, cultures and personalities. Everyone feels included and unlike favours that are often left behind, these portraits are taken home, kept, and remembered.

The Experience Matters as Much as the Art

I studied painting and printmaking at university and that foundation sits behind every line I draw. It’s what allows the work to feel effortless, soft, minimal, flowing  while still holding structure and confidence.

But art is only one part of the experience at weddings, I’m reading the room constantly. Sometimes the energy is calm and intimate. Sometimes it’s celebratory and full of laughter. My role is to meet the moment as it is, to hold space when needed, and to blend seamlessly into the day. Clients often tell me that it felt like I was simply part of the wedding. That means everything to me because this isn’t just about drawing faces. It’s about being present for people during a meaningful moment in their lives.

Across Sydney, the Hunter Valley & Regional NSW

I’m based in Sydney, but I travel regularly for weddings across NSW. Some of my favourite celebrations have been held in places like:

  • The Hunter Valley, with its long tables, open skies and relaxed warmth
  • Berry, where everything feels intimate and considered
  • The Southern Highlands, with its quiet elegance and softness
  • The Blue Mountains, where nature sets the tone for the day

Each place brings its own rhythm, and I love adapting the experience to suit the setting. Whether it’s a large celebration or a smaller gathering, the intention remains the same  to create something personal, beautiful and lasting.

About Grace ( Hi, it’s me )

I’m Grace Choi, a live illustrator based in Sydney, working across Sydney, the Hunter Valley and regional NSW. I create hand-drawn portraits at weddings and events, with a style that’s minimal, expressive and timeless.

I’ve built this practice slowly, alongside motherhood and a deep commitment to my craft. Everything I do is rooted in genuine care for the art, for the people, and for the feeling they carry home with them.

If you’re planning a wedding and are drawn to the idea of giving your guests something meaningful to keep  something personal, artful and full of heart, I’d love to hear from you.
