Bambi & Charbel’s Rainy Day Romance at The Grounds of Alexandria

Real Wedding: Bambi & Charbel’s Rainy Day Romance at The Grounds of Alexandria — Featuring Live Illustration by Grace Choi

In May 2024, Bambi and Charbel tied the knot in a winter wedding full of love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Hosted at the ever-iconic The Grounds of Alexandria, their celebration embraced the rain and cold with warmth, joy, and heartfelt connection. I had the absolute pleasure of being their live wedding illustrator, bringing a creative, personal touch to the day.

A Winter Wedding at One of Sydney’s Most Iconic Venues

I’ve had the joy of illustrating weddings at The Grounds of Alexandria a few times now, and each experience is uniquely special. This venue is one of Sydney’s most loved — and for good reason. With its lush gardens, rustic elegance, and whimsical charm, it sets the perfect scene for love stories of every kind.

Even on a rainy day, The Grounds transforms into a cozy, romantic wonderland. Bambi and Charbel’s ceremony took place in the Garden Arbour, followed by a warm and lively reception in the Garden Gazebo — both spaces radiating charm despite the drizzle.

A Creative Connection That Meant the World

When Bambi was searching for wedding vendors, she came across my work online — and as she told me later, she just knew I was the one. As an illustrator and art teacher herself, it meant the world to me to be chosen by another creative. There’s something deeply special about that kind of connection — when someone who understands the process and the passion behind the art sees your work and feels aligned right away.

Our collaboration flowed effortlessly, and I felt truly honoured to be part of their day in such a personal way.

Creating a Memorable Live Illustration Experience

Because I’ve illustrated weddings in all kinds of weather — sunshine, wind, and rain — I was well-prepared to adapt on the day. I found the perfect cozy spot to set up my station, where guests could gather around, watch the illustrations unfold, and have a chat. The atmosphere was relaxed, intimate, and full of curiosity and joy.

One of the highlights for me was being able to really connect with the guests — sharing what I do, telling stories through my sketches, and feeling the genuine appreciation from everyone who sat for a portrait. Even Bambi and Charbel’s parents were delighted by the experience, which meant so much.

Illustrations That Captured the Magic

Throughout the day, I created personalised illustrations of guests and special moments — capturing not just outfits and smiles, but the emotion and spirit of the celebration. Each piece was lovingly crafted on the spot, becoming a cherished keepsake for guests to take home.

From the rainy romance of the ceremony to the vibrant energy of the dance floor, the illustrations reflected the elegance and personality of Bambi and Charbel’s winter wedding. These sketches weren’t just art — they were little time capsules of love and joy.

Kind Words from the Couple

“My husband and I wanted to extend our biggest thanks to Grace for her service last night. Despite the rain, our guests were incredibly impressed with her creativity and were eager to receive a personalised illustration. So many heartfelt comments we received thanked us for providing such a unique experience, and truly, that credit goes to Grace and her spectacular work. Each illustration beautifully captured the fun and refined style that is uniquely hers. As two laid-back people, we wanted to commemorate those who celebrated with us, and finding Grace’s work on Instagram was a no-brainer. We highly recommend her.”
